Historia

River Ebro Apartments are situated on a quiet riverside street, in the historic quarter of Mora d'Ebre, just below the castle. The riverbank, a recreation area with BBQ facilities and country lanes are literally only metres from your front door. In the other direction you are only 2 or 3 minutes walk from a lively little town with plenty of boutique type shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants. Mora d'Ebre is not a busy tourist resort such as you find on the Costas, it is a small working town (population of about 5,500) which has the good fortune to be on the banks of a major river and surrounded by stunning mountains! This is your chance to discover hidden corners,to explore towns and cities that by and large have been overlooked by mass tourism and to experience life amongst the ordinary residents and enjoy the local culture and fiestas. Mora d'Ebre is centrally located in the fertile Ebro Valley. The lowlands by the river are a patchwork of neat fields growing peach, pear, cherry, orange, olive and almond trees. It is a delight to see in Spring when the trees are in blossom and the wild poppies and margaritas flower. River activities include fishing for the enormous catfish and carp, leisure trips in boats or hiring a kayak and paddling your way down the river.

To the West of the valley rise the Els Ports mountains a wild and craggy landscape with large areas of pine forest and a rich variety of wildlife such as the wild cat, the mountain goat, wild boar, vulture and golden eagle. There are fantastic, virtually unknown walking trails, a purpose made cycling track and stunning landscapes. To the East are the famed Priorat vineyards where vines cling precariously to seemingly impossible slopes and where you may wish to visit a bodega or two!. This area too has many walking trails and is also renowned for excellent climbing opportunities.

Travelling just 35 minutes south, where the river meets the Mediterranean you will find the Ebro Delta. In contrast to the mountains left behind this is completely flat land covering an area of 320sq kilometres which was made a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2013. It is a watery land of lagoons, rice paddies, salt lakes and reed beds which form a unique ecosystem supporting hundreds of species of birds. The light and reflections also make it a haven for photographers.

As well as the deserted beaches that can be found around the Detla, the golden sands of the Costa Dorada are only 30 minutes away. Take your pick from small coves, pretty fishing ports or low-key resorts. For a livelier family day out Port Aventura Theme Park near Salou is only 45 minutes drive from Mora.

If you like to dig into a regions history, you will not be disappointed. The cities of Tarragona, Tortosa, Reus and several medieval villages are all worth a visit for Roman remains, castles and modernist architecture and the more recent history of the Spanish Civil War.

The nearest airport to this location is REUS (45 mins) or failing that BARCELONA is just short of a 2 hour drive. We recommend that you hire a car if you want to explore the area to the full.
